Banks, Bailouts & Budgets Americans awoke Monday morning to yet another new debt - $326 Billion to be exact for our latest and greatest bailout. This time for Citigroup. Apparently, Citigroup had some financial disturbances, uncanny for a BANK doncha think? I wonder how long it will take for my no-fee Citibank checking account to begin charging fees.... Anyhoo, apparently we can't trust the adults in society anymore and certainly not with our money. Just for fun, here is the 2008 recap thus far: Bear Sterns $30 Billion AIG $150 Billion Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac $200 Billion Big 3 Auto Makers $25 Billion Troubled Asset Relief Program $700 Billion Citigroup $326 BillionSo that's a 2008 total of $1.431 Trillion dollars - 14.6% of our 2007 GDP! That's enough to rank as the 5th largest country in GDP in 2007. 5th. When we spend money, we don't just spend money - we spend entire countries!

His reasoning was that those in the Bible Belt seek out God in times of trouble (and really all the time for that matter) and are thus less predisposed to fretting about things that are outside of their control. This got me thinking about our currency. Right there stamped onto our money is that fear-calming phrase "In God We Trust." So in this time of financial and economic crisis who do we turn to? God? Wrong! Apparently, we have been turning in droves to our lovely Government. From banks to auto manufacturers to States to foreclosed homeowners, we've all been thrusting out our open palms to Uncle Sam. That same piece of work that helped encourage this very mess.
